This 1” gold metal campaign item has a recessed head-profile of the candidate with words “Henry” and “Clay” on the obverse, and the slogan “Clay, Frelinghuysen, Protection, Union” on the reverse. The bevel edge is nicely adorned with laurels. Fine. The 1844 presidential campaign between Henry Clay and James Polk centered on the question of annexing Texas and who owned the Oregon Territory. Clay's Whig party made no reference to Texas in their platform and Clay had early in the campaign indicated opposition to annexation. Polk and the Democrats, on the other hand, advocated taking all of Oregon and the "reannexation" of Texas. The question of free and slave states lurked behind these topics, Clay tried to walk the line between the two issues, falling victim to his waffling.
