This bound volume of The Daily Cleveland Herald contains issues from July-December 1859, with 154 issues, all intact. From October 17 to December 19, roughly 60 issues, almost every issue carries some news of John Brown and his infamous raid on the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Va. It begins with reports of the “Negro Insurrection,” to “Incidents of the Execution” and the transport of Brown’s body to North Elba where it was interred. In-between are the revelations that “Old Ossawatomie Brown” was the leader of this negro insurrection. Many early issues carry as many as three breaking reports as the story unfolds from the capture and examination of the prisoners to the trial, sentence and hanging. It carries Brown’s speech before he is launched into eternity, the obsequies along his last trip home, letters to his family and to others who contacted him with support and praise. Speeches of politicians and abolitionists, the last interviews of the condemned conspirators and the execution of the negro accomplices. Great history. Binding in great shape, issues fine.
