CHEW, Benjamin (1722-1810) was a fifth-generation American, a Quaker-born legal scholar, a prominent and successful Philadelphia lawyer, head of the Pennsylvania Judiciary System under both Colony and Commonwealth, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Province of Pennsylvania. Chew was well known for his precision and brevity in making legal arguments as well as his excellent memory, judgment, and knowledge of statutory law. His primary allegiance was to the supremacy of law and constitution. Document Signed, 7” x 8-1/2”, “Benjamin Chew”, City of Philadelphia, October 24, 1775, wax seal present, VG. In part, “Daniel Clymer of this city.. informs me ... taht on Sunday the 22nd he had stolen from him two valuable horses, and that he is about to send his servant said named John Peter Denkirken in pursuit of them and the thief and has requested of me to give a Pass for that pupose ...”
