Observations on Certain Documents Contained in No. V & VI of "The History of the United States For the Year 1796," In Which the Charge of Speculation Against Alexander Hamilton, Late Secretary of the Treasury, Is Fully Refuted. Philadelphia: Printed for John Fenno, by John Bioren, 1797. 37, lviii pages. Marbled boards with gilt leather spine entitling the volume "Hamilton Reynolds Affair". Hamilton's notorious affair with Maria Reynolds jepordized his political future and this detailed account in which he admits adultery and blackmail payments while denying his role in financial scandal left him exposed to his political enemies and with little hope of high office in the future. This account was, however, successful in clearing Hamilton of all charges of financial impropriety. Boards and spine fresh and clean. Frontispiece has some paper loss not affecting any text, which has been professionally restored. Evans 32222. Note: This item sold in NYC last year for over $20,000. See link below.
