A rare early war-date Alabama soldier's letter, 2pp. oblong 8vo., written by Sgt. Henry S. Figure, [KIA Wilderness]. Co. F, 4th Alabama Infantry, Yorktown, Va., April 22, 1861, reading, in part: "The regiment left Ashland last Monday…those who were not able to go were left behind…we staid there three days & then took the cars & went to Richmond…we left next morning for this place. We took the cars at Richmond for West Point…there took a schooner & got here fatigued…we slept in an old house…they had a very hard march about eighty miles…yesterday Gen. Whiting ordered an election to be held for company & regimental officers…the conscription bill has passed & we are in for two years. [Evander McIver] Law [later major general] is Colonel. McLemore (major of 14 Ala.) is Lt. Col. He beat Goldsly. [Gustavus B.] Mastin [KIA Seven Pines, Va., 5/31/62] is Capt., W. W. Leftwick [KIA Gettysburg, 7/02/63] is 1st lieut., Orlando Halsey is 2d Lieut., Jim Brown 3d Lieut. none of the old Lieuts. was elected. [Milton E.] Croxton is Orderly Sergt….I am 3rd Sergt…fight is expected daily…H. S. Figure." Eventually, on May 22, 1862, Figure was commissioned 1st lieutenant and adjutant of the 48th Alabama. He fought valiantly with the Army of Northern Virginia until fate caught up with him on May 6, 1864 when he was killed during the battle of the Wilderness. Overall VG
