A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written most likely by Pvt. Edwin James Howlett 10th Virginia Cavalry (Wise's Legion) from Winchester, Va., Sept. 14, 1862, to his wife, reading, in part: "…the Yankees is between here and Maryland. I don't know when we will be able to get to our Legion as the Yankees is between us…whether our Legion is in Maryland…we can not find out…there is some five thousand Yankees at Harpers Ferry cut off from their main army. The country through which we have passed seems to be a very good farming country. We had to cross two rivers since we left the Rapidan. The bridges were burn on both of them so we had to wade them. They was about waist deep…the Yankees left this place about ten days ago. We can not get any news from Jackson's army. I would like very much to hear from him and what he is doing…we will leave here tomorrow…which way we will go…I can not tell…but I hope to Maryland as I would like to see that country. I am getting most awfully tired of this war. I hope it will soon come to close…I want to get back home…Jackson & A. P. Hill are marching down this side of the Potomac…Lee, D. H. Hill Longstreet and the others on the other side of the [Potomac] river all going down to Harpers Ferry to bag 8,000 Yankees that they have got hemmed in up down there. President Davis is here at this place. He is a brave looking old chap so I think my chances are good for getting into Maryland…they are now fighting at Harpers Ferry…twenty five miles from here…E. J. H.". Overall VG
