A good war-date Confederate Cavalryman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written Pvt. Richard T. Hunter, Co. C, 9th Virginia Cavalry, [MWIA Malvern Hill, Va., 7/27/64], "Camp 6 miles South Petersburg, Va., July 3, 1864, in part: "…I have been exposed to the dangers of the battle field. The balls have fallen around me thick and fast…worse than that you have been exposed to an insulting merciless, cowardly foe…my dear let us…pray more to be more humble and in short live exclusively for Heaven…Willie Burke & Bayham Tyell has joined Company B. The citizens of Westmorland have petitioned to President Davis to send our company down to assist them protecting that section of country…Col. [Richard Lee T.] Beall [brigadier general January 1865]…is anxious to get our Reg down on the Rapk…to protect the country on both sides of the river…the enemy are in such crowds around us. It would be nice…to return home and fight on and around our firesides…I do not know that I have killed a Yankee but I have done the best shooting I could…Grant has sent some of his men to [a] post as yet unknown…part of them have recrossed to the north side of the James River. Grant's Head Qrs. is still in the vicinity of Petersburg. They have thrown some shells inside the city and killed some of the citizens…I never saw a horse so much reduced in so short time…R. F. H."
