War-date Autograph Document Signed by H.T. Lake, Orderly Sgt., 1pp. quarto, August 31, 1862, Camp Townsend, by Order of Capt Miles Payne, and issued to Lt. Saml. Cole, 45th OVI, it reads “You are hereby ordered to take every negro man wihtin one mile of said camp and report him in person to me at my head quarters in said camp immediately. Said Negroes to be used to build a stockade as a defence against he attack of the Enemy, and to be released to their masters as soon as said work is completed....” Fine condition.
