A great Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., by Pvt. Rudolph Eickmeyer 17th New York State Militia, Fort McHenry, Baltimore, July 25, 1863, on finely lithographed stationery depicting: "Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, MD" copyrighted and published in 1862 by E. Saches, Baltimore, reading, in small part: "…if you look at the picture of Fort McHenry you will see it surrounded by water on 3 sides. Outside of the gate we took a boat…landed on the foot of broadway…the harbor of B. is a very nice sheet of water but does not compare with the Bay of N. York nor does the shipping look near so numerous. The street we went uo is a very wide one & the houses are not but like any part of N. York…most of them seem to be private residences…all of have little yards around them. We took the cars fro Druid Hill…a park about a mile outside of the city…on the end of the RR line we took a omnibus…into the park…there is very little art in Druid Park but the trees are old & the whole surface is covered with luxurious grass plots…we visited…the whole line of earthworks that surround Baltimore. When Lee crossed the Potomac & came to Maryland all B. turned out & went to wok on these forts…now there are 15 besides McHenry, Marshall & Federal Hill…the next move…to the Washington Monument…look at the picture…you will see the Monument as it stands on Monument Square…we certainly [did] not expect to see so grand a sight…we went in & went up to the gallery you will notice on the picture…you cannot imagine what a beautiful sight Baltimore is…the city looks like a map spread out under you. The houses & people look like holes on the floor. The harbor is right in front…the whole company is collected in front of the tent & so I close… R. Eickmeyer…". Some soiling with toning, else VG
