War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed “Wm. H. Cross” 23rd Mass. Volunteers, 4pp. octavo, Morehead City, Near Fort Hickman, North Carolina, July 1863, and reads in part: “...we have been in another Battle, this making the 5th Battle I have been insince I enlisted. The last one I was in we started in light marching order with 5 days rations we started about ...We marched 20 miles before we halted...it was the hardest 4th of July that I ever experienced in my life. There was about 4 or 5 in our Brigade fell dead in the ranks from sun stroke. After we had marched 3 days we encountered the enemy. We fought them 4 hours and finally succeeded in driving them. Our Lieut Col. was wounded in the shoulder by a piece of shell...We are now under the Brigs Genl Hcckman as Major Genl. Foster was ordered to supersece Genl Dix. The news came to day that Genl. Lee had succeeded in getting back to Virginia with the loss of about 1/2 his men...” Fine condition.
