Pair of war-date Union Autograph Letters Signed by L. Gambill, in part: “...[1/27/1863 Baltimore] judging from the remarks in yr letter about the price of goods &c., that it is a most fortunate thing that we did not go into business for I expect we would have been under the necessity of using our influence & compelling congress to pass a general bankrupt law...The Secesh here are jubilant & the Union men blue & particularly so this evening as it is reported that McClellan has resigned his commission as an officer in the Army. We thought yesterday & this morning that Burnside resigned, so that Lincoln (the scoundral) might have another chance to appoint Little Mac to the command & we hoped Abe would do it, but now Hooker is in command & McCllean has resigned. We all feel very sad. I assume you; but we do not blame little Mac the only wonder is he did not resign long ago; for the infernal repulbicans have tampered with him & insulted him beyond human endurance. If it is true that McClellan has resigned & Abe accepts it, I will tell you my faith in the future restoration of the Union & glory of our country is gone...[7/9/1863 ] We will return to Balto on Monday...what do you think of the news; glorious isn’t it. The excitement was very great in Balto when Lee made his entree into this state & Penn. Secesh was above par, but I tell you it is at a heavy discount now. I think Meade showed himself to be quite a commander, for he handled his men well & no mistake. The impression down here is that the game will be up by 1st Jany 1864, I hope so indeed...” More.
