Pair of war-date Union soldier Autograph Letters Signed by 2nd Lieutenant John Connell, 56th New York Infantry, they read in part: “...[3/17/1864 The army has made a forward move...We are all ready to march....All the troops here are under marching orders; we are told there is sixty thousand of us going...my spirits never was better than at present and we are all eager and willing to move forward and crush out this rebellion...[8/8/1864 Beaufort, South Carolina] we expect to be ordered to Grants Army as most of the troops in this department are ordered to join him...There has already three colored Regiments left from this post and are now on their way to join that heroic but unfortunate Army of the Potomac. I only trust their along with others on their way may be the means of carrying General Grant through the streets of Petersburg and on to the games of Richmond...I have every hope and entire confidence in General Grants patriotism and ability to lead our Army to victory and to such an overwhelming one that it will forever expell and disperse the Rebel hords in this front and thus bring forth the dawn of peace...” Both fine condition.
