Lengthy Autograph Letter Signed by Captain Calvin D. Mehaffey, who served with the 1st Infantry, U.S. Army, 2pp. large folio, July 30, 1866, Jackson Barracks, addressed to Lt. Samuel Wallace, and reads in part: “...I remained in the Field with Col. Wood to the End of the Penisular Campaign, and in the Maryland Campaign until he was relieved in Oct. 1862 in Pleasant Valley Maryland by Genl. M.R. Patrick with whom I remained on duty excepting three montsh in the winter of ‘62 & ‘63 up to the Battle of Gettysburg...At White Oak Swamp Bridge (one of the Seven Days Battles) I was retained as aide in order to report the progress of the Battle to Genl. McClellan at Malvern Hills. During the night of the same day afte the arrival of the Army at ‘Malvern Hills’ I carried dispatches from Genl. McClellan to and from Commodore Rogers at Haxall’s Landing Commanding Flotilla on James River. With the exception of two or three hours I was with Genl. McClellan during the Battle of South Mountain and I received orders from him personally at the Battle of Antietam....I personally directed and executed the written parole in duplicate of the two thousand Rebel Prisoners wounded and sick in hospital...When our Army was opposite Fredericksburg on the occasion of a Flag of Truce from Genl Lee I had the honor of being assisted by Genl. Burnside with writing and conveying the answer to the Enemy in Fredericksburg.. I was with my Regiment from Aug 1863 to July 1864 and for the balanace of the war (Lee’s Surrender April 9th, 1865)I was nominally in the field with Col. Wood as A.A.A.G...” Much more.
