War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by George A. Bowie, 5th Maine Light Artillery, 4pp. octavo, April 16 & 17th Near Steven’s Station, with cover, in part: “...There was considerable excitement here yesterday as there was to home I suppose at the news of Lincoln’s assasination and Sewards and the others it was not believed at first. W got the Baltimore paper this morning and got the particulars of it. They were willing before to let Lee go but now they say that every one of the leaders ought to be hung. Most all of the men feel very bad about it. Them that have been opposed to him say that they had rather he would have finished up this rebellion....The report came yesterday that Lincoln was dead and the Christian Commission flag was put at half mast...six of Mosby’s officers came in yesterday from him offering to surrender on the same terms that Lees Army did. We do not know what answer they got. They say that part of this Army is goiong to Western Virginia...” Fine condition.
