Group of twenty-six (26) historians autographs and signed letters, includes: MACAULAY, Thomas Babington , 1st Baron Macaulay, FRS FRSE PC (1800-1859) was a British historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist, on contemporary and historical sociopolitical subjects, and as a reviewer. His The History of England was a seminal and paradigmatic example of Whig historiography, and its literary style has remained an object of praise since its publication, including subsequent to the widespread condemnation of its historical contentions which became popular in the 20th century. Clipped signature “W.B. Macaulay.” Fine condition...plus; CARLYLE, Thomas (1795- 1881) was a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, translator, historian, mathematician, and teacher. Considered one of the most important social commentators of his time, he presented many lectures during his lifetime with certain acclaim in the Victorian era. One of those conferences resulted in his famous work On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History where he explains that the key role in history lies in the actions of the "Great Man", claiming that "the history of the world is but the biography of great men". Clipped signature. Very good condition...plus; ACTON, John Emerich Edward Dalberg1st Baron Acton, KCVO DL (1834-1902), was an English Catholic historian, politician, and writer. He was the only son of Sir Ferdinand Dalberg-Acton, 7th Baronet, and a grandson of the Neapolitan admiral and prime minister Sir John Acton, 6th Baronet. Between 1837 and 1869 he was known as Sir John Dalberg-Acton, 8th Baronet. He is perhaps best known for the remark, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men...", which he made in a letter to an Anglican bishop. Autograph Letter Signed, “Acton” 2pp. octavo, pertaining to publishing. A founding member of the Bloomsbury Group and author of Eminent Victorians, he is best known for establishing a new form of biography in which psychological insight and sympathy are combined with irreverence and wit. BEARD, Mary Ritter (1876-1958) was an American historian and archivist, who played an important role in the women's suffrage movement and was a lifelong advocate of social justice through educational and activist roles in both the labor and woman's rights movements. He became best known for his work The Story of Civilization, 11 volumes written in collaboration with his wife, Ariel Durant, and published between 1935 and 1975. He was earlier noted for The Story of Philosophy (1926), described as "a groundbreaking work that helped to popularize philosophy". Fine condition...plus; FREEMAN, Douglas Southall (1886-1953) was an American historian, biographer, newspaper editor, and author. He is best known for his multi-volume biographies of Robert E. Lee and George Washington, for which he was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes. Typed Letter Signed “D.S. Freeman” March 28, 1940, pertaining to a copy of General Lee’s Order No. 9, surrendering the Army of Northern Virginia to General U.S. Grant. Fine condition....plus; MORISON, Samuel Eliot (1887-1976) was an American historian noted for his works of maritime history and American history that were both authoritative and popular. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1912, and taught history at the university for 40 years. He won Pulitzer Prizes for Admiral of the Ocean Sea (1942), a biography of Christopher Columbus, and John Paul Jones: A Sailor's Biography (1959). Autograph Letter Signed, “Sam. E. Morison” on his letterhead, 1pp. quarto, November 24, 1965. Fine condition...plus; SCHELSINGER, Jr., Arthur Meier (1917-2007) was an American historian, social critic, and public intellectual.
