TAYLOR, Zachary (1784-1850) was the 12th President of the United States, serving from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. Taylor previously was a career officer in the United States Army, rose to the rank of major general and became a national hero as a result of his victories in the Mexican–American War. As a result, he won election to the White House despite his vague political beliefs. His top priority as president was preserving the Union, but he died sixteen months into his term, before making any progress on the status of slavery, which had been inflaming tensions in Congress. Manuscript Letter Signed “Z. Taylor” as President, 1pp. quarto, Washington D.C., March 27, 1849, addressed to Elias C. Page, in response to a letter by Page which is also offered in this lot, and reads in most part: “...Your friend letter...and the accompanying present of a handsome pair of boots of your own manufacture, have been duly received. Through I feel much delicacy in receing in my present position, such marks of consideration at the hands of my friends, my embarrassment is greatly relised in your case by the circumstances under which your present is offered, and by the elevated spirit which your letter breathes; and it is therefore cordially and gratefully accepted. With my best thanks for your useful gift and my wishes for your health and success...” Fine condition
