FILLMORE, Millard (1800-1874) was the 13th President of the United States (1850–1853), the last to be a member of the Whig Party while in the White House. A former U.S. Representative from New York, Fillmore was elected the nation's 12th Vice President in 1848, and was elevated to the presidency by the death of Zachary Taylor. He was instrumental in getting the Compromise of 1850 passed, a bargain that led to a brief truce in the battle over slavery. He failed to win the Whig nomination for president in 1852; he gained the endorsement of the nativist Know Nothing Party four years later, and finished third in that election. Autograph Letter Signed “Millard Fillmore” 1pp. quarto, January 28, 1840, and reads in full: “Will you do me the favor to send me immediately the names of 10-15 or 20 of such persons in your town as are active at elections and to whom I can occasionally send a speech, document or paper - Please give me their names plainly written, immediately under the name of their nearest post office, if there is more than one post office in your town. We are all in fine spirits here. Every thing looks well for Harrison and reform, all are united and confident of success. Please do give me the names as soon as possible...” Near fine condition. During the election of 1840, New York Senator Fillmore united with fellow Whig party members to bolster the support of candidate William Henry Harrison. Fillmore’s notable influence in Congress and within the regions of western New York steered Harrison towards a rousing presidential victory.
