ROOSEVELT, Jr. Theodore (1858-1919) was an American statesman and writer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He also served as the 25th Vice President of the United States from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd Governor of New York from 1899 to 1900. As a leader of the Republican Party during this time, he became a driving force for the Progressive Era in the United States in the early 20th century. His face is depicted on Mount Rushmore, alongside those of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln. Typed Letter Signed “Theodore Roosevelt” 1pp. quarto, White House letterhead, September 5, 1904, addressed to General Blackmar, and reads “Let me thank you for your letter, and then congratulated you most heartily on the honor which has come to you and which you so richly deserved...” Fine condition. Lieutenant Wilmon W. Blackmar (1841-1905) in August 1861 to enlist in the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry and participated in various endeavors in the Western Army and in the Army of the Potomac. After his involvement in the Battle of Antietam he was successively promoted to Corporal and then first lieutenant in charge of Company H of the 1st West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry. It was during this time, on 1 April 1865, that he formed a line and charged into the Confederate forces, causing them to disperse. For this act he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Blackmar mustered out of the army at the conclusion of the war, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, and went out to study law at the Harvard Law School. He served as a lawyer and then, upon retirement, as judge advocate to several Massachusetts governors. He was later elected Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1904 and died in office on 16 July 1905.
