ROOSEVELT, Jr. Theodore (1858-1919) was an American statesman and writer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He also served as the 25th Vice President of the United States from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd Governor of New York from 1899 to 1900. As a leader of the Republican Party during this time, he became a driving force for the Progressive Era in the United States in the early 20th century. His face is depicted on Mount Rushmore, alongside those of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.Executive Order Signed “Theodore Roosevelt” 1pp. quarto, this copy presented to General Wimore Blackmar, January 17, 1902, and reads “The attention of the Departments is hereby called to the provisions of the laws giving preference to veterans in appointment and retention. The President desires that wherever the needs of the service will justify it, and the law will permit, preference shall be given alike in appointment and retention to honorably discharged veterans of the Civil War who are fit and well qualified to perform the duties of the places which they seek or are filling.” Mounted, else fine condition, with transmittal letter.
