“Katharine Walton/A Tale of the Revolution”, written “during the war 1861-63”, 28pp., (the first 4 are light, balance dark and very readable). the story is written in penmanship book by Geo. McDowell, Philadelphia. It appears to be the effort of someone copying one of the novels of William Gilmore Simms. It apparently begins with about chapter 15 of one of his books involving Katharine Walton, “The Colonel’s Daughter.” Scenes between Col. Singleton and Lt. Porgy, both characters of Simms. Very noble prose, with Singleton urgin Porgy to take out a detachment, knowing they are low on ammunition and supplies. He doesn’t want Porgy to start an unnecessary fight, but neither wants him to “doe like a dog” which would be against the tenets of professional soldiering and would be a “great humiliation.”
