A conflicted Southern citizen's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Virginian "Berde", [n. p.], March 14, 1861, to his/her soon after considering Lincoln's actions to reinforce Fort Sumter, in part: "…Mr. Boman…is still at Charleston. I just heard that Linkin [Lincoln] had with drawn Major Anderson or will withdraw him. If it is true there will be no war. He, I think, has sense enough to know …he will have Virginia to whip too. She is in favor of the [state] joining the Union but oppose to see the South scared and if he under takes he will find Virginia all as one man. There is now doubt but the whole matter will be yet settled the politicians don't hurry things…if they will put it in the peoples hands it all will be settled again and this Union again will stand with would be better than divided…and try and live in peace…the times are hard here in money matters and a great many are breaking up and making their property ever…Berde."
