War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed “William Croft” 1st Virginia Cavalry, 2pp. quarto, Harpers Ferry, April 25, 1861, and reads in part: “...We arrived here safe on Tuesday morning with 50 men & horses, all well. We had to lie on the ground the first night, but on Wednesday morning, we took possession of an old Academy & consequently have very good quarters. They have had us on duty every night & day since we have been here, scouring the country & mountains from one end to the other which we find a pretty tough business. The Federal Troops set fire to the Armory before they left & burnt about 14,000 Stand of Arms. They or we are now sending the machinery that was left to Winchester....Do not know when we may be attacked, but are always ready & intend to give them a warm time of it, if they undertake to pass by this place...tell all the boys to come on & fight for Virginia...” Fine condition.
