War-date manuscript Confederate army receipt, issued to Harrison Cooper, a farmer near Berryville, Virginia, by Capt. Joel Watkins Marshall, reading, in part: "Near Berryville [Va.], July 18, 1864. The Confederate States to Harrison Cooper Dr to 15 doz. sheaf oats. I certify that the…account is just and has not been paid [and] was used by my company on detached service. J. W. Marshall, Capt. 14 Regt. Va. Cavy, Jackson's Brigade." Capt. Marshall (1822-1873) would be captured just weeks after at the battle of Moorefield, West Virginia on August 6, 1864. Confined Wheeling, W. Va. and Camp Chase, Ohio until he was exchanged on Feb. 15, 1865. Light soiling, else VG
