War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Fort Walker, Camp Campbell, Hilton Head, S. C., Nov. 17, 1861, in part: "…I am well with the exception of a lame leg caused by a bayonet wound…we are employed in repairing the fort and throwing up redoubts, building storehouses, bakeries etc…I have never repented coming out here for I think it the duty of every man to help put this cursed thing down but I would not advise any one to enlist unless they wanted to try the experiment of living on half cooked pork and hard bread…some of the d-d scoundrels are making a good thing of it but they will catch hell before they get through with it. Our company officers are not a d-d senates worth better. Their whole business is to gall us…the first and second brigades are to leave in a few days to join another expedition fitting out for some place south of us…we are bringing in any quantity of contrabands…the hospital is full all the time dying off fast with measles, fevers all sorts of diseases. Quinine is the remedy for all…D. D. Barrows".
