War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed “A.B. Hawley”, 5th Vermont Infantry, 3pp. quarto, Camp near Alexandria, Virginia, September 3, 1862, and reads in part: “...We left this camp the 29th as we supposed for good, but Stonewall Jackson thought we had better return...we marched...nearly out to Bull Run where we first began to hear of the defeat of Pope, and it soon became evident in the stragglers we met, all running in disorder towards Centerville. We, in Smith’s Division, kept on stopping the stragglers as much as possible, and it was amusing to see what ruses the men would make to get by our lines. Some would pretend to be wounded and go limping along, trying to imitate a lame man. Sometimes two or three would be supporting a slightly wounded man who could walk as well as they could....we kept on beyond Bull Run and helped cover the retreat of Pope’s Army and acted as rear guard back to Centerville where we arrived about two o’clock in the morning, very tired and sleepy...The whole army has confidence in McClellan and hate McDowell, and call him a traitor. Pope and Hallack are not much thought of as they have done nothing to merit much praise. But if McClellan was put in command of the Army unhampered by the Secy of War, I think we should see different times, but so long as the War Dept. undertake to manage the movements of the Army, so long will we have such disasters as we have lately met with and a prolongation of the war...” Fine condition.
