War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Amos M. Quick, 50th Pennsylvania Infantry, 8pp. octavo, Coosaw Island, April 25, 1862, and reads in part: ‘...I fell in with one of the natives and in the course of convesation he informed me that that morning while he was going through the woods he suddenly came on the habitation of a monster Alligator...I made arrangements with the native to guide me to the haunt of the Alligator...The guide now came and we all started for the field of sport accompanied by two large dogs and the natives armed with clubs...went directly to Mr. Alligators hole...The other native got a long pole...they punched him and now and then he would pip his head or tail out of the water splashing foaming and snapping off the sticks as if they were straws...the Negroes continued to punch him in hopes he would come out and I might get a shot at thim...Seeing how the battle was going I took off my shoes & stockings rolled up my pants and with a long pole went in on my muscle. I poked him some when he getting desperate grabbed one of the poles and hung on & was drawn nearly out of his hole...I shoulted to my companion to bring my Dutch six pounder which he did ...I cocked my gun and ordered the guide to turn his pole and draw his head toward me which he did thus exposing his eyes & the top of the skull a good mark. I quickly took deliberate aim and fired, there was a loud report, a cloud of smoke and a breathless suspense when the smoke cleared away there lay before us the quievering and dying form of a monster alligator nearly 8ft in length....” Fine condition.
