Withdrawn from Harpers Weekly, November 15, 1862, “The Army of the Potomac-A Sharp Shooter on Picket Duty. From a Painting by W. Homer, Esq.”, 13-3/4” x 9-1/8”, minor edge roughness which will matte out. The image is of a soldier sitting in a tree and holding a rifle. He is aiming at a target far in the distance. As embedded artist with the Union army, Winslow Homer captured life at the front of the Civil War. The “Sharpshooter” became Homer’s first significant work in oil paint. It was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1863 and is now in the collection of the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) in Maine, which also manages the Winslow Homer Studio, just 12 miles south in Prouts Neck.
