War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by William S. McCrea, 141st New York Vols, 3pp. octavo, Arlington Heights, March 25, 1863, and reads in part: “...We are now occupying barracks made of logs & situated on dry ground. The place we moved from was a mud hole. These barracks were built by the 25th Maine Regt. They have been in them for about 6 months, but left for the front yesterday morning. I suppose some fifteen thousand troops started from this vicinity yesterday...One great drawback to our felicity however, is we have found that the rats had possession before we did & our cat has deserted, probably having reconnoitered the place before & ascertained the strength of the enemy she had to deal with....We have only about a dozen here in our company beside the sick, so if the Rebs come on us, we shall have to run...” Fine condition.
