A great war-date Massachusetts mid-term election, anti-Copperhead and anti-McClellan letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Plymouth County, Massachusetts' senator N. H. Whiting, Custom House, Boston, Oct. 13, 1863 addressed to veteran officer Capt. Hiram A. Oakman, who had been recently discharged after being severely wounded during the battle of Fredericksburg. A desperate plea requests that he side with the Union League during the upcoming Massachusetts's mid-term election, reading, in part: "As I intimated to you at Worcester I am desirous that you should be elected representative from our District…I don't know you care anything about it, as you said your ambition did not be in that direction…I…have no objection to the position. There is one possible obstacle to your success. Your neighbor Botes considers himself a candidate before the people and will…get some votes at the Convention…I have advised him to stand aside…I want to make the issue with our "Copperheads" by putting up a man who not only is superior in intellectual capacity…but who has shed his blood to save the country from disgrace and ruin. I want to make the case a strong one. It cannot be made stronger than to have you for own candidate…your friends must be active and attend the Convention without fail…I wish you to…join the Union League…a person intimated to me…not long since [stated] that you were at least indifferent about the matter. I hope it is not true…I should vote for you…though you may not be a member of the League, I yet think the order is a good one and…I fear that your present position…may be used against you in the Convention…McClellan has shown the cloven foot is his letter on the Pennsylvania election and appears the villain [and] that he is a murder on a grand scale. Yours in haste, N. H. Whiting." Apparently, Oakman did not take the bait and finished the war as colonel of the 30th United States Colored Troops after reenlisting in 1864. Near fine.
