War-date Autograph Letter Signed “F.H. Pierpont” 1pp. quarto, on Commonwealth of Virginia stationery, April 2, 1865, and reads in part: “...I have the honor to forward you a copy of my last annual Message on the first and extending through two or three pages you will find a statement that is believed to be about correct of the debt of Virginia...made no provision for paying any interest this year, hoped of the state debt incurred during the rebellion is included in this estimate....” Fine condition. PIERPONT, Francis Harrison (1814-1899) called the "Father of West Virginia," was an American lawyer, politician, and Governor of the Union-controlled parts of Virginia during the Civil War. After the war, he was the Governor of all of Virginia during the early years of Reconstruction.
