REAGAN, Ronald (1911-2004) was an American politician and actor who served as the 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. Prior to the presidency, he was a Hollywood actor and union leader before serving as the 33rd Governor of California from 1967 to 1975. Typed Letter Signed “Ron” on his personal stationary, 1pp., May 7, 1979 written to Mr. Bill Brock, Republican National Committee. In large part, “... I agree with you completely that ours must be a party of hope. We’ve had enough of Mr. Carter’s no growth policy. I’ll spread the word ...” Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy for President of the United States in New York City on November 13, 1979. On July 17, 1980, he became the nominee of the Republican Party for the 1980 presidential election. On November 4, 1980, Reagan carried 44 states and received 489 electoral votes to win the election. Jimmy Carter, the incumbent president, carried six states, as well as Washington, D.C., and received 49 electoral votes. Brock was chairman of the Republican National Committee at the time, later becoming United States Trade Representative under Reagan then United States Secretary of Labor under Reagan.
