Broadside pertaining to the Reverend Major Jealous Divine (1876-1965) an African American spiritual leader, who claimed to be God. He founded the International Peace Mission movement, formulated its doctrine, and oversaw its growth from a small and predominantly black congregation into a multiracial and international church. This broadside is 1pp. quarto, with top portion being writings of Rev. Divine while in the Suffolk County Jail, following his arrest for disturbing the peace, it reads in small part: “...Stone Prison Walls and Iron Prison Bars cannot hold ME, for I AM Spirit, even tho’ I AM flesh materialized. Yet in MY flesh I do see God. My eyes see HIM for MYSELF, and not for others...” Followed by passage “The Man Who Walks Alone” by R.M. Malcolm. Fine condition.
