Southern slave content letter, 2pp. 4to., written a certain J. Q. Hays, Woodlawn, [Tenn.], March, 3, 1835, to N. Russell Middleton, Charleston, S. C., reading, in part: "…on leaving Carolina, Genl. Hamilton aprised me that the condition of the estate was such that he did not think it would be necessary for me to advance anything towards the liquidation of the debt incurred by the purchase of the Negroes…I have purchased lands to the amount of something over $10,000 & the family of Negroes bought…of Dr. Smith at $2300 which have exhausted the the proceeds of my crop of the last year…J. Q. Hays…". VG
