A good antebellum Shenandoah Valley letter, 1p. folio, written by Noah I. Henkel, New Market, Shenandoah Co., Va., Feb. 4, 1852, I. H. Luke, in part: "…we some three four years ago received a charter to establish a female Seminary in this place. We joined together and raised a private subscription for the purpose of erecting a suitable building which was erected. The amount raised was not sufficient to pay, consequently there is still a debt hanging over the building which we have tried to raise by subscription, but have failed…we thought we would trouble the Legislature…for a letter of the of the where with to help up out of the difficulty. Our memorial will be hand[ed] in by Col. Marr…Noah I. Henkel." Expected folds, else VG.
