A good antebellum University of Virginia student's letter, 2pp. legal size folio, written by Charles Daniel McCoy (1837-1879), Kerry, July 10, 1860, to his brother, reading, in part: "…Taylor Martins [private in McNeill's Partisan Rangers] went home sick Friday…he was [?] with Typhoid Fever, but was thought to be out of danger. woods went home commencement day. Voorhers made a first rate speech on "the American Citizen" some of the old Whigs think it had too much Democratic doctrine in it, e. g. "states rights", "annexation of Cuba" etc. I always thought these doctrines to belong to Whigs & Democrats alike of the South. I nee saw such a crowd as he had…the aisles were entirely filled. when he sat down old [Thomas] Jeff Randolph [Thomas Jefferson's grandson and, as rector of UVA] has soon as he could be heard moved "Three cheers for the Indiana Orator" which was given with a good will…C. D. McCoy." The original stamped transmittal cover, postmarked at the University of Virginia, addressed: "H. P. R. M'Coy, Covington, Allegheny Co., Virginia.", is included. McCoy served faithfully and gallantly as captain of Company D, 25th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. He was POW at the battle of Spotsylvania. Light toning, else near fine.
