War-date Confederate officer Autograph Letter Signed by Holmes Y. Conrad (1840-1915), 1st, 7th, 11th, and 17th Virginia Cavalry, 2pp. octavo, Mt. Slick, July 17, 1862, and reads in part: “...I made a trip to Winchester, flanked the pickets. Surprised them all, and returned safely. I found all very well. Father looking rather thin, but hearing from us all and from the Army, did him good. The Yanks are behaving very well - not searching or even stealing. They have put up fortifications upon the hill, back of Mr. Alf Powell’s place, which through having the appearance of being extensive are by a telescope but a sham and put up to terrify the citizens. They threaten to shell the town if Jackson enters it. All of our negroes are gone except Stephen, James and a girl. The people look daily to be delivered by Jackson. They have 300 Yankees and think it terrible to be kept there by them...” Fine condition.
