War-date Confederate cavalryman's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. J. Zeb Hearst, Co. C, Jeff Davis Mississippi Cavalry Legion, "Camp Vicksburg, Va., Aug. 1, 1862, in part: "…I have been scouting & picketing…in Carolina Co. between the North & South Anna River…saw no Yankees etc. We were sent up there because we heard that some of the Yankee cavalry were making a raid in the country & we thought that we could ambush them…if we had gotten to the ford of the North Anna River…a few minutes sooner we could have had a chance at them. They recrossed after stealing some 20 horses foam the citizens & some negroes I hear of many negroes leaving & going over to join the Yankees. They go in squads of 20 or so. Some of the citizens say and one told me that 20 or 30 passed his house, they had carts & seemed to be moving bag & baggage…one of the negroes had an old fiddle & another an old banjo…they were singing & playing at a great rate. The Yankees in many instances are very insulting to the ladies…the ladies in town treat them with utter contempt…I sent you my daguerreotype by Dr. Dillon also a long letter…but it seems that…neither of them should reach their destination . I have been situated so that I could not write you for I was far in the enemy's lines…a;; communication was cut off…J. Z. Hearst…". Near fine.
