War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed by W.S. Conrad, 13th Virginia Battalion of Light Artillery, WIA and hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the foot on 4/10/1864, 2pp. quarto, In the trenches near Petersburg, Virginia, December 9, 1864, and reads in part: “...Our battery is on the line about one miles from Petersburg, just to the right of the Crater and about four hundred yards from the Yankee works. We have been in this position since the 29th of last June. Trench life is very disagreeable at present on account of the bad weather & want of wood. I am getting very tired of the Army, and often wish that the war was over, but am not willing to give up until the Yankees acknowledge our indepence. Let that be one or forty years, for I think that any man who has not patriotism to fight for his country now in her hour of greatest need & when he sees the headstones of those he loves desecrated by a vile & wicked foe, I think he should be drummed out of the Confederacy....There is no news of importance to write except that we are expecting a big fight at any hour...Did the Yankees get to Uncle Jerry’s when they came up the valley? If so, did they do you any damage?...Direct to Mortar Battery, Mosley’s Battalion Artillery, 4th Corps, Petersburg, Virginia.” Fine condition.
