A good early postwar letter, 4pp. 4to., written by ex-Confederate John William Schultz (1824-1908) served as private in the 5th Virginia Inafntry who surrendered at Appomattox in April, 1865, Winchester, [Va.], Jan. 7, 1866, to his aunt, Mrs. M. P. Lindsay, Greensboro, N. C., reading, in small part: "…Uncle Robt. could be suited with a farm near us…some has sold at public sale less than old prices…this is the country to purchase land…I am…in favor of the Valley, it is…far superior to any other, there has been little sold to Northerners, tho there are many strangers among us. Our old merchants are…reinstating themselves and working out the new comers. I am sorry you are worried by the change of servants, tis a great bother here…I feel tis a relief to be rid of them. Of our old lot we have one man & one girl. They do very well. The two country farms were rented out before the war. The negroes were hired. On the old home farm there is a Union man who had his own way during the war. No profit, but damage. He now boasts of being able to buy a farm. He is a very bad man. By the force of law we expect t get him away…I expect then to take charge…things look very much like improvements here. Our R. Road has been turned over to the Company and will soon run to town. There are two good Female schools here…the old Academy (male school) was destroyed by the Yanks. From this may be built in Institute…the Lutheran Church holds a Fair in Balt. on 22nd Febry…Annie (Miller) is president of the Fair, with a crowd of 12 or more Rebel Girls. All will be transported to Balt…we expect a big thing…the proceeds of the Fair are to repair the church which was taken by the Fed. Troops for a Hospital…J. W. Schultz." Near fine.
