Pair of War-date Union soldier Autograph Letters Signed by Thaddeus Keith, 12th Massachusetts Infantry, POW at Gettysburg and KIA Wilderness 5/6/1864, the first 9/30/1861, 7pp. octavo, reads in part: “...This morning the Rebels shelled the cmap of a Pennsylvania Regiment about two or three miles from here, throwing about one hundred shells iinto their camp, killing one man and breaking it up....We are here on special duty that is the guarding of this ford. Eight companies are and two are at Frederick. We have one or two batteries here. I think the river is too high here now, I think for them to attempt a passage here. We threw some shells into Virginia yesterday, but received no answer...Cannonanding has commenced a few miles from here near to the scene of the morning entertainment. We have the music almost daily...” and the second 3/31/1862, Camp near Fletchers Chapel, Virginia, 7pp. octavo, and reads in part: “...Outside a snowy landscape. Hail comes pattering gentley on our tented roof....it’s not very comfortable in our shanty today with only one stick of wood on our woodpile. And the privilege of going quarter of a mile to get more. But then the roads won’t be much improved by this storm and Joe Hooker will have to wait a day or two before he can trot us around even for a review, which he has appointed several times and been blocked by the howling storm...” More on camp rumors concerning the regiment. Both very good condition.
