War-date Autograph Letter Signed by Reverand Israel P. Warren of the American Tract Society, 3pp. octavo, December 17, 1862, on American Tract Society letterhead with cover addressed to Rev. A.H. Quint, Chaplain 2d Reg Mass V., Near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and reads in small part: “... Yours of the 8th gave me much pleasure as showing that you have begun your book. I like your several suggestions & have nothing to add except taht I should be glad of one book or half a dozen on the several themes mentioned....You scorned one of our little books unmercifully in the Congregationalist & I think unjustly. It was prepared by a field officer in the Army, especially for the use of his own Regiment, compiling it from a standard work from high medical authority....You yourself say that the soldier needs a Testament. Yet think how the same style of criticism might equally well be applied to this sacred book. ‘Resist not evil.’ Very good, you might say, in its place but hardly applicable to him who enlisted for the very purpose of putting down rebellion...I know that you are a believer in free speach as I also am. You are doing a good service in exposing various shams connected with the Army. I only fear that the discharge of your great guns at so very small game will cause them to be less regarded when turned upon evils worthy of them...” Fine condition.
