Early Marines content correspondence during the American Civil War when the Marines were first introduced. Four letters are written to Major W.W. Russell, Paymaster of the U.S. Marine Corps, by Hobart Berrian, Treasury Department Auditor. One is written to Major Pupell by Berrian. All on Treasury Department, Fourth Auditors Office. One letter is dated October 3, 1862, about the death of John Callinan, a private marine who died on board the St. Lawrence. Another letter is dated September 26, 1862, informing that Captain Edward McDonald Reynolds recently detached from the Colorado and was pad in full. Another is an engrossed form dated June 12, 1862, that John Howard has been discontinued and paid. Another letter is dated September 5, 1862 about an enclosed letter (which isn't here) from Thomas Greens referring to Russel. The last letter is to Major Pupell, about Lieutenant George Cummings and about his settlement. Al in good condition .Some darkening and creases from having been folded. Nice piece of early Marine history! 8" x 10". Major and Paymaster, William W. Russell: A Controversial Nineteenth Century Officer of Marines. A biography is presented of Major and Paymaster for the US Marine Corps William Worthington Russell. He was born on September 20, 1821 in Fredrick, Maryland. During the American Civil War, he briefly acted as Aide-de-Camp to US Major General George B. McClellan. His inebriation on duty and personal conflicts with other military officers are also presented.
