Pair of war-date Union soldier's letters totaling 9pp. 8vo., first on, 5pp. 8vo., patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Abner Schopp, Co. C, 122nd Penn. Vols., "Camp Cloud's Mills, [Fort Richardson near Georgetown, DC], Aug. 24, 1862," in part: "…we are at present [at] what they call Clouds Mills about sixty miles from Richmond…I feel very hardy and strong. I pray that my health might continue on so until I have faithfully served out my time…my prospects for coming back are very poor…it is astonishing to see the soldiers pass here everyday…you cant imagine…how desolate every thing looks [here]…Manheim folks live like kings towards [what] us soldiers have to endure…I will gladly endure more if we can preserve or save our country and Free Liberties…I am…seated before a beautiful mansion once owned by Commodore Forrest now in the rebel navy. It is used at present for our headquarters. It is a very nice pleasant place indeed…I am seated on an elevated spot. I can take nice view over the whole camp. The soldiers are very near all out drilling. It does look splendid…our men seem to stand it right well so far…friday we marched about six miles until we arrived at our place were we are at present…". Second, 4pp. 8vo., Camp near Leesburg, [Va.], Oct. 27, 1862, in part: "…Sunday morning we left Maryland and crossed the bridge. It took us all day…we were in the rear and had to wait until Burnside's Corps crossed…oh, it was awful. We were in the mud up to our knees…we are very near the rebels. They expect a big battle not far from here…your, Abe." Both VG (2 letters).
