War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., Camp Hambright, [Harrisburg, Pa.], Oct. 6, 1861, to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "We are camped about one mile west of Harrisburg on a very pleasant spot…we had [have] to cook for ourselves…we got marching orders…to Pittsburg…I understood from the colonel [Hambright] not long there [until] he had all his companies together then [we] will be send onto Missouri…I was at Camp Curtin this morning and there are about 2 or 3 thousand laying there…I was going to Harrisburg to see the town, but the captain don't let none of his men outside of the guard…the best thing we have yet got from the government are the blanket. The coat is very thin and overcoats we received none yet…it is a dam way to go to war. We did not receive a cent yet for our service…I want you to tell my wife to get them close [clothes] at Blickenderfers. One pair pants and boots…H. Gibble." VG
