War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., "Camp Wood, Munfordville, Hart County, Ky., Feb. 11, 1862," to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…we have some stirring times…ever since we had that glorious victory at Fort Henry, Tennessee…we made large bon fires and some regiments came out with torch lights…for more then a mile. Col. [Edward Charles] Williams came here with his cavalry [9th Penn. Cavalry] of about 1100 men. They made a fine appearance…last Sunday Capt. [John] Wise [Co. F, 9th Penn. Cavalry] gave us a visit with his men…yesterday (Monday) about 9 o'clock we seen a cavalry coming down the pike…the camp cry was another cavalry etc…they were marching past us on the pike all day till about 7…yesterday evening…it was all lined with soldiers. They took fences down and struck fires and laid till morning when they started again. I asked one of them how far back the rear was…he said about 5 or 6 miles…and also told me it was Gen. Mitchel's Division, about 24,000 strong…he is going to take the advance…toward Cave City. They all cross the rail road bridge. It looks awful to see the teams on the bridge 135 feet in the air and hardly no banister on the bridge…it is also reported that McCall's Division will be here in a week…of nearly 50,000 strong…it looks mighty blue for Old Buckner…we are now drawing on towards him and so are the force from Nashville…our right and left wing wants to have a little share of the fun to start the Old Buck…we lost one of our Captains (Mr. Dysant). He died at Louisville. Our captain is also sick. He looks bad…we have a great many sick…H. Gibble." VG
