Vols., "Camp Morehead, Columbia, Tenn., April 19, 1862," to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…if they get well whipped at several places…they are almost bound to give up. The citizens of this town begin to die a hard cecesh death. They begin to believe and say they are licked out and beginning to speak of this enormous war Tax. They say many of their leading men of the war will be penniless…their is no business going on in this town by any of the citizens. There are several stores opened by our sutlers. They are making money fast…the citizens are laboring under a great disadvantage. They cant get anything for their money…Tennessee money is a poor go. The silver is very scarce here. Our U. S. money is plenty at present as the soldier…got paid off…most of them drawer their whole pay here, but…we cant get no change. Everything is very high. We can buy all kind of eatables. They are trying to get as much of our money as…possible…the river is always lined with soldiers with some kind of a line to fish…much about the Pittsburg fight…we are but…45 miles from that place…men that has been down at the field of battle…it was an awful fight…we had marching orders the other day to go an[d] reinforce Gen. Mitchell, but…it was countermanded…N. B. Col. Williams regiment is now attached to this division. The Manheim boys among his crout [Crowd] is all well…H. Gibble." VG
