War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., "Park Barracks, Louisville, KY., Dec. 9, 1862," to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…I recovered my health again and intended to follow my command, but I cant get no transportation …the cars all taken up to transport provisions to Nashville…Gen. Rosengran's will have a sufficient supply of provisions hauled to Nashville…before he makes a move towards the enemy…our regiment is now 150 miles from here near Gallatin, Tennessee…the new Penna. Cavalry (Called Anderson Guards) left here yesterday for Nashville…it was splendid regt…Gen. [John Hunt] Morgan has captured and killed a good number of the 2nd Ind. Cavalry the other day [at the battle of Hartsville, Tenn., Dec. 7, 1862. This battle is considered to be the opening of the Stone's River campaign]. Our men are in hot pursuit after him…since here I see how they work the card. There are many officers in this town that has not traveled 50 miles on foot with their regiments and loiter around town and when pay day comes they will draw their pay. There are also hundreds of privates here playing off and trying for their discharges…I begin to see the humbug of this war…I am acting Sergt. of the guard…there are now about two thousand at this Barracks…about 3 dying daily…some that had their arms or leafs amputated and are now nearly healed. I have seen 11 of our regt. that had one of their arm taken off…disabled men shall be either discharges or get a furlough to go home till they recover. If true…it will save many a man's life for they are neglected…tell Adam Miller that the secesh are middling strongest…our new Genl. [William S. Rosecran] is ready…he will run them back to the Gulf of Mexico…H. Gibble…". Near fine
