War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., Fort Wood, Chattanooga, Tenn., Feb. 5, 1864, to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…our regiment…have enlisted as Veterans for 3 years or during the war. We will be mustered out today…how long it will go before we get mustered in…and…start for home [is]…3 weeks…at least the Col. thinks so. We have 225 men The balance will be put into another regiment for the balance of their time. The band we will bring along on furlough. They are not long enough in service to go as veterans. They intend to stay with us their 3 years…we was kept very busy…on picket and…making entrenchments and building magazines…we are blessed…drawing full rations again…there will be peace in less then one year from hence. There is rebels coming in daily, some days whole companies. I seen 654 coming in…two squads when on picket…everything is quiet along here at present. Our men are very busy making this…cemetery [present day National Cemetery]. They are hauling the dead bodies…by wagon loads. It will be a very nice place…it is very unpleasant to dig out all the soldiers around here and bury them again…Ruben Gibble [Pvt. Reuben H. Gibble 34th Penn. and 191st Penn. died as POW Mar. 29, 1865] has come home. I hope he will enjoy his 30 days…I have received the tobacco…it is still cheaper than what we can buy it here. The gloves are also good…Chambers and Ike Carpenter also reenlisted. Frane Arndt did not yet and don't believe he will…H. Gibble. N. B. If old Lincoln keeps on drafting…lookout for Adam and you…else you will get in the ring yet." VG.
