War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., Kingston, Ga., June 6, 1864, to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…I have arrived safe…they are stationed at the above named place to guard our supplies. The cars don't run further than here. It is too dangerous to run further. It is about 56 miles from Atlanta where…the next battle will be fought…they are well fortified on a hill near this place…but Gen. Sherman is too wide awake. He intend[s] to…flank them…two corps are working…in the rear…this movement may…save many a poor soldier's life…they are nearly done out. There are many deserters coming over and they say they cant stand it much longer…I am very much tired of this rebellion…we was send on a cattle car…we got transportation on the top of the cars to Chattanooga. At this place we was put into the field…it was a perfect mud hole…it is a long road to travel into Dixie. Co. A & B are detailed as provost guard in these town…I came to the regt yesterday…I was not taken as a deserter as some of the Manheim Copperheads thought (and said.) I was a little too shrewd for that…the Provost Martial & Hospital doctor at Harrisburg saved me of all punishment…I am very glad that I am with my command again…we met 5 trains of wounded soldiers at Bridgeport going to Nashville…our army done very hard fighting at Resaca, Ga…the rebels lost much more then…our men did…I was informed that our Col. [Henry A. Hambright] is dead. It is not true. He only got wounded [in the side at the battle of Buzzard Roost, Ga., May 9, 1864] by a piece of shell and broke one rib and bruised another. He is able to walk about. The cars are…full on top with soldiers coming in[to the] front…our army is getting larger daily . The citizens have no means to live…and those that pretend to be loyal are put to work for the government. It is painful to look at the half starved families running around here at the commissaries [looking] to get something to eat, barefooted and ragged and…one half in a family way [pregnant]…H. Gibble…". Also, included is a 3pp. 8vo., letter written by Gibble from "U. S. A. Hospital, York Pa., May 12, 1864," concerning his recovering from illness at that hospital before returning to his regiment. Both near fine. (2 letters)
