War-date Union cavalryman's letter written by Pvt. Jeremiah H. Obetz, Co. G, 9th Penn. Cavalry, Camp Dunham, [Bowling Green, KY], May 20, 1862, 4pp. 8vo., to his friend Henry C. Gringrich, reading, in part: "…our whole Company G and Cos. K, A., B. & D. went after [Confederate guerrillas Col. John Hunt] Morgan's men when the news came…that he was at Glasgow. Our two Co's. went after him and traveled within 10 or 12 miles within the place were he committed the act. Then the orders came about 10…in the night that we should retreat as his force was to[o] strong…it was impossible for us to stand [and] fight with him, so we came back to Bowling Green…next eve…I & [Corp. Martin Van Buren] Neavling and some few more of our men went out on a scout…when we came back our tropes had left already so if they get him all the Manheim Boys will se the sport except me and M. Neavling…Gen. Damont [Ebenezer Dumont, 7th Indiana] Regt. and our two cavalry joined together and followed him wherever he goes…I would like to be with them to see the fun…J. G. [Pvt. John G. Gibble] was all right before he left…further he has no home sick[ness]…his pony is just as good a one as we have…is young and spry…J. H. Obetz…". VG
